Should You Lift Weights Before or After Baseball Practice?

Weight training is a key component to baseball player development. Players at the higher end of the sport train year-round to build and maintain their sport-specific strength. But players must carefully manage their weightlifting regimen during the season. They can’t let their training interfere with practice and game performance or put them at risk of injury.
Professional strength and conditioning coaches suggest that weight training should occur after practice, not before it. In some cases a high school may schedule pre-game weight training because of scheduling limitations with the school’s weight room.
Players should not expect to add much strength during the baseball season. The focus should be on maintaining the strength that players built during the off-season and incorporating that strength and power into their games. Without in-season strength training, some of that strength will be lost.
Players need to manage their weight training to remain fresh for their games. Strength and conditioning coach Eric Cressey suggests a training schedule for high school players with three games per week: Sunday, off completely. Monday, game. Tuesday, practice and short strength training. Wednesday, game. Thursday practice, no strength training. Friday, game. Saturday, practice and longer strength training. ¡°I may deviate from this schedule and do a bit more — adding a Thursday strength training session — with a younger player who needs to develop … or someone who is not getting all that much playing time,¡± Cressey wrote on his website.
Strength and conditioning coach Jon Doyle cautions players not to train the day before games “unless you have found this specifically works for you

5 Things You Need to Know About Underpronation

Underpronation, also known as supination, is a foot-positioning problem encountered by runners and other athletes who run during their sport. However, according to a 2011 article from Mark Charrette published in Dynamic Chiropractic, ¡°High-arched feet, referred to as excessively supinated feet, are not nearly as common as overpronated feet.¡± Though it’s a defect that affects a relatively small amount of runners, it’s important to understand the causes, the diagnosis and how to treat it properly so that you can more safely and efficiently.
Both pronation and supination are issues signified by the way your foot hits the ground as you are running or walking. But while pronation involves and inward roll of your foot and ankle, supination is the outward rolling of your foot and ankle. In a pronated foot, the inside part of your foot and the arch absorb most of your weight as you land. A supinated foot, on the other hand, means that the outer edge (pinky-toe side) bears the majority of your weight. Neither foot position is healthy for your feet or ankles, as both can cause serious pain and injuries.
¡°Underpronation occurs during running or walking when the foot does not flatten out effectively

,¡± explains Geoffrey Alan Gray, president of Heeluxe, LLC, and biomechanics expert for Ahnu. ¡°The causes of underpronation can come internally from our body or externally from our shoes or the surfaces we are on.¡± It’s important to decipher which of these factors are contributing in order to treat the root of the problem. Gray says internal causes can include rigid joints, alignment problems in the heel or the ball of the foot or strength and flexibility imbalance in the ankle. When you naturally underpronate, the muscles and joints in your feet are working to try to correct the imbalance. This can lead to issues in other joints like your knee and hip and even injuries. On the other hand, external causes may include unstable or worn-out footwear or running on uneven surfaces.
Other issues from overcompensation include stress fractures, which is the most serious effect of underpronation, according to Gray. ¡°Other effects include high risk for overuse injuries, such as tendonitis and muscle strains,¡± he says. A 2012 study in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research found that foot posture can be linked to increased incidence of lower limb injuries in runners. Though the study authors were not able to include foot orthotic wearers in the study, they reported ¡°supinated feet appeared to be related to higher rates of injury than pronated feet.¡±
Since it’s hard to see how your foot lands as you run (you should be looking ahead, after all), you may want to find a professional to help analyze your gait and let you know if you underpronate

. However, there are other ways to tell if your feet tend to position themselves this way. ¡°The easiest way to spot if you underpronate is to look at the wear pattern on the rubber on an old pair of shoes,¡± says Gray. ¡°Someone that underpronates will show wear on the outside/lateral portion of the shoe, whereas a neutral striker will show wear in the midline of the shoe, and someone that overpronates will have wear on the inside/medial area of the rubber.¡± When consulting a professional, such as a physical therapist, running coach or trained running store employee, it’s helpful to bring in an old pair of running shoes. In addition to looking at the wear on the bottom of your shoes, they’ll use their gait-assessment skills to watch you walk or run and determine if you’re under or overpronating.
The steps you should take to correct underpronation depend upon the severity and causes of the defect. It might be as easy as changing to a new pair of shoes, should your underpronation come from external causes. However, if caused internally, it’s much harder to correct. ¡°[If caused internally] it’s typically difficult or not possible to change underpronation,¡± says Gray. ¡°[This is because it’s] based on your bone structure, muscle-firing patterns or running/walking stride.¡± Should it be due to your stride, you can work with a running coach to not only improve your stride but to get exercises that can help improve your running form. These might include ankle, calf, hamstring and quad stretches or inner thigh and calf exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles.
Are you a runner? Have you ever gotten a gait analysis? Do you pronate or supinate while running or walking? What steps have you taken to correct your gait? Did you know some of these facts about underpronation? Were any surprising to you? Share your thoughts and questions in the comments section below.

What Is a Lifetime Sport?

Lifetime sports are physical activities that people can enjoy throughout their lives. In contrast to contact sports such as football, ice hockey, boxing and wrestling, less strenuous sports such as tennis, badminton, archery and fly fishing are suitable for people in all stages of life and can serve as physical and social outlets. Another aspect of lifetime sports is that you can continue to develop mastery and skill as you get older, with wisdom and experience helping to make up for reduced reflexes and physical abilities.
Badminton — a racket sport that is played on a rectangular court divided by a net — can help you retain agility and coordination as you grow older. Badminton can be played as either a singles or a doubles game. The object is to strike a shuttle — or feathered projectile — over the net so that your opponents are not able to return it. Basic equipment required to get started are rackets, shuttles, a court and a net. Loose clothes, comfortable socks and thin-soled badminton shoes are the usual attire. Badminton is played to 21 points, with a successful serve scoring a point. Whichever side wins the rally — or succeeds in hitting the shuttle so the opponents can’t return it — receives another point. The serve, the forehand grip, the backhand grip, and the forehand overhand are basic skills you need to master to play badminton.
Like badminton, tennis can be played as either a singles or a doubles game and involves using a racket to hit a projectile — in this case, a ball — over a net

. Tennis has its origins in 13th century France and a game called jeu de paume, in which players hit balls over a net with their bare hands. The name tennis is adapted from the French phrase tenetz, meaning take heed, traditionally shouted as competitors struck the ball. Modern-day tennis is played on a rectangular court of concrete, asphalt, grass or clay. The outcome of a game is determined by the best of three out of five sets; in order to win a set a player must score at least four points in total and two more than his opponent. People can enjoy tennis at an advanced age. Doubles tennis — which is less strenuous — is a particularly good bet for older adults.
Archery is a precision sport in which participants aim and shoot at a target using a bow and arrow. Archery requires a steady hand, a good eye and the ability to control your nerves. Participating in archery can foster a sense of connection with an ancient tradition. Egyptians were fashioning bows with flint arrowheads as long ago as 3500 years B.C. Today, target archery — the most popular form — involves shooting arrows at a target from a set distance. The target has 10 concentric circles, with the score depending on where the arrow lands on the target. The innermost circle is worth 10 points; missing the target entirely yields a zero

Fly fishing — an activity that can be both relaxing and challenging — involves the use of carefully crafted hand-tied artificial flies, which mimic the look of the fish’s natural food. You can catch a variety of fish, including brook, brown and rainbow trout, sunfish, crappies, and even athletic and scrappy northern pike. It takes practice to master the skill of fly casting, which has been likened to trying to throw a leaf. The Fly Fishing Basics website recommends starting with a mid-weight fly rod, line and reel; some stores sell beginner’s packages. Backward, forward and roll casts are important skills to learn for fly fishing.

Is it Illegal to Ride a Bicycle Without a Helmet?

Depending on where you live, it might be illegal for you or your child to ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet. There are no federal laws mandating bicycle helmet use in the United States, although many states and localities have mandatory bicycle helmet laws applicable to minors. Some cities and municipalities also have laws mandating that people of all ages wear helmets when riding a bicycle. However, 13 states have no statewide or local laws mandating bike helmet use for children or adults.
Since 1987, many states and localities have passed their own bicycle helmet laws, mostly limited to children under 18. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, 21 states have statewide laws that require minors to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, but no state has a statewide law requiring adults to where bicycle helmets. Laws vary by state; some states require that all minors under 18 wear helmets when bicycling and other states require only children under 12 to wear helmets. The following states have statewide bike helmet laws for minors: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee and West Virginia.
While there are no statewide laws requiring adults to wear bike helmets, some cities have laws mandating helmet use for bicyclists of all ages. Sixteen states have no statewide laws mandating bicycle helmet use but have laws in some localities — including certain cities, municipalities and parks — requiring either minors or both minors and adults to wear helmets. For example, while Texas has no statewide law, Arlington, Austin, Houston and several otherTexas cities have laws requiring minors to wear helmets and Dallas has a law requiring people of all ages to wear a helmet when riding.
Since bicycle helmet laws vary by both state and locality

According to the BHSI, as of June 2010, 13 states have no state or local bicycle helmet laws applicable to children or adults

There is some debate in the United States and other countries over whether bicycle helmet laws should exist. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, wearing a helmet is the single most effective way to prevent head injury resulting from a bicycle crash. Accordingly, some safety advocacy groups, including the BHSI, take the position that bicycle helmets should be mandatory for people of all ages. However, some researchers, including Piet De Jong, a mathematician at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, argue that bicycle helmet laws might do more harm than good. According to a 2010 paper authored by De Jong and published in “Social Science Research Network,” mandatory helmet laws often deter would-be bicyclists from bicycling and, depending on the safety of the riding environment, the net societal decrease in cardiovascular benefits resulting from helmet laws might outweigh the health benefit of reduced head injuries.

The Best Diet for Running Cross-Country

Cross-country runners have different nutritional needs than nonrunners. They require an increase in certain nutrients to provide sustained energy for long distance runs. The best diet for running cross-country consists of a precise ratio of protein, fat, carbohydrates and iron. This mix enables a runner’s body to operate at peak performance.
First and foremost, cross-country runners must remain hydrated. According to Purdue University, cross-country runners should consume a great deal more water than nonathletes. When you run, energy is released as heat. Your body uses water to sweat and cool itself to prevent overheating. Water also helps prevent muscle fatigue and cramping. Cross-country runners lose four to eight pounds of water every hour. To find out how much water you need to drink, weigh yourself before and after training. For every pound you lose while training, drink 16 ounces of water.
A cross-country runner’s diet should include iron-rich foods. According to the University of Chicago, iron helps produce red blood cells and carry oxygen throughout the body. This is essential for maintaining athletic endurance

. Iron-rich foods include meat, poultry, fish, leafy green vegetables, beans and whole wheat bread. Do not take iron supplements unless your doctor recommends them. Too much iron can lead to constipation.
Load up on carbohydrates if you’re a cross-country runner. According to Colorado State University, carbohydrates produce more energy than the same amount of protein. Cross-country runners have more endurance with ample amounts of carbohydrates stored in their bodies. Complex carbohydrates last longer than simple carbohydrates derived from sugar. Cross-country runners should get 70 percent of their energy from complex carbohydrates. A diet that includes whole grain spaghetti, potatoes and whole grain bread eaten two to three days before a race will fill up your glycogen storage spaces.
Protein is also essential in the diet of cross-country runners. While the primary energy comes from carbohydrates, protein is burned as well. Protein is also essential for muscle repair and recovery. According to Greg Crowther of the University of Washington, runners require more protein than sedentary people because of the intense demands they place on their bodies

. At least 15 percent of your calories should come from protein sources like meat, eggs, tofu and low-fat dairy products. Endurance athletes should eat about 2.5 grams of protein per day for every pound of body weight.
Don’t fear the fats. If you run for more than one hour, your body will turn to fats for most of its energy. Cross-country runners must train their bodies to efficiently utilize fat for energy. To do this, they must consume good fats like omega-3 fatty acids, polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat. These are found in olive oil, fish and vegetable oil. Avoid bad fats like trans fats and fatty red meat.

Fun Golf Games for Leagues to Play on the Course

Golf is mostly a solitary game of you and a ball against the elements, but there are some games you can play within the sport to make it more interesting. Some games can be competitive, others can be about socializing, and both can be a great way to improve your skills while having some fun.
This is a game for four players split into two teams. Each hole played is worth 2 points. One point is for the “good” and one point is for the “bad.” After a hole is played, the best score by a player on the first team is compared with the best score of a player on the second team. The team with the best score gets the “good” point. Then the same is done for the other player on each team. Whichever player had the better of the two lowest team points scores a “bad” point for his team. In the case of a tie, the point is carried over to the next hole.
Wolf is a fun game for four players. At the start of each hole, one player is deemed the “wolf,” — this should rotate for each hole. After each player tees off, the “wolf” may choose any of the other players to be his partner for the hole, or choose to be solo, based on the tee shots. If the “wolf” chooses a partner, the other two players become a team. If the “wolf” decides to be solo, the other three players are a team. At the end of the hole, if the “wolf” wins solo he gets two points. If the “wolf” wins with the help of a partner, each player gets a point. If the other team, of two or three players, wins the hole, all players from that team get a point

. On par-three holes, the “wolf” must choose his partner before the tee shot. On par-five holes, the “wolf” may wait until everyone’s second shot to choose his partner. The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
Alternate shot golf, sometimes called foursomes, is played by four players split into two teams. Each team’s players alternate hitting the same ball. If player one tees off, player two from that team has to play the second shot from where it lands. Then player one will play the third shot and so on until the ball is holed. This actually makes a game of golf go more quickly, theoretically

This game is for a four-man team tournament-style competition. All four players on the team play their ball throughout the game. But scoring is based on a three-hole rotation. On the first hole, the team score is equal to the score of the player with the lowest score. On the second hole, the team score is the combination of both of the lowest scores on the team. On the third hole, the team score is the combination of the three lowest scores on the team. Then the rotation starts over again on the fourth hole.

Youth Football Conditioning Drills

Football is a popular sport, among kids and adults. This is where kids learn the individual skills and the team skills to make them good football players. Conditioning drills are an important part of football practices. When done correctly, they can provide both physical and emotional benefits for youth football players, states Coach Joe Bouffard.
Romanian Dead Lifts are specific strength training drills for children 13 years and older, according to USA Football. The player will either need a broomstick, dumbbells or a weight-training bar. The players holds the bar lengthwise at waist level with both hands. The player stands with feet are hip width apart and then keeping their back straight, bends at the waist without bending their knees. When bending the player pushes their buttocks back without moving their toes while allowing the bar to hang towards the floor. Then slowly begin to come up by pulling from the waist without bending the knees or arching the back.
According to the USA Football website, this drill is designed for players aged 7 and older

. The players will get into a squatting position, with their knees bent and their buttocks towards the ground. The players will then begin to walk on the balls of their feet while in this position. Players should walk forwards and then walk backwards. It is important for players to keep their buttocks close to the ground and not raise up when walking. This drill works to improve the player’s range of motion, coordination and balance, as well as developing lower body strength.
According to The Guide To Coaching Sports website, this drill focuses on warming up the player’s throwing arm, throwing the ball to the target, follow through and concentration. This drill can be done as part of the warm up before practice or before a game. Have players pair off in twos and space players about 10 yards apart from each other. Have players kneel on both knees. The players will take turns being the receiver and the quarterback. The receiver will raise his hands up in the air so that the quarterback will have a target to throw the ball. The goal is not to throw the ball hard but to aim for the target and focus on follow through.

, which is a slang term for your gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, are responsible for extending and abducting your hips, which means they drive your legs back behind you and out to your sides. In order for your workout to stimulate gains in your glutes, it¡¯s got to adequately overload your muscle tissue.
Workouts that are effective at bringing about increases in muscle size feature numerous exercises for each muscle group. The Kinesiology and Health Department of Georgia State University recommends that each exercise is completed for three to six sets, depending on your training history, with each set consisting of six to 12 reps. This workout volume will break down and overload the muscle tissue of your glutes, which in turn stimulates increases in muscle size. Include three glute exercises to include in your workout and complete your workout two times per week with two days of rest in between each session. The American Council on Exercise recommends compound, multi-joint exercises for building mass, such as deadlifts, squats and lunges.
Barbell deadlifts primarily target the gluteus maximus, but also work your quadriceps and calves. Grip a weighted barbell with your hands just wider than your hips and hold it town in front of your thighs with your palms facing your legs. With your feet set to hip-width apart, push your hips back and bend your knees so that your lower the bar towards the top of your feet. Extend your hips and knees to return to a standing position. Keep the bar over your feet. Your back should remain straight throughout the entire exercise

.
Back squats primarily develop your gluteus maximus, but also require assistance from your quadriceps and calves. With a weighted barbell positioned on the back of your shoulders, set your feet to hip-width apart. Begin by pushing your hip back and then bend your knees to lower your hips toward the floor. Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor and then extend your knees and hips to rise back up to a full standing position.
The glutues maximus is the primary muscle worked during walking lunges. You can either set a weighted barbell on the back of your shoulders or hold dumbbells down by your side. With plenty of room in front of you, take a large step forward with one foot so that you¡¯re in a staggered stance. Bend your lead knee to drop your back one toward the floor until it¡¯s just short of touching the ground. Push off your lead foot and bring your trail foot up so that you return to a standing position. On the next rep, step forward with the opposite foot, continuing until you¡¯re finished with all reps.
To hit your gluteus medius and minimus, incorporate dumbbell lying hip abduction into your workouts. Lie on your side with your head resting in your hand and both legs stacked atop each other and hold a dumbbell against the side of your top thigh for resistance. Keeping your knee straight, lift your leg up as high as you can while keeping your hips square and then lower it back down to complete the rep. Switch legs after the set.
Another exercise for your gluteus medius and minimus is the side bridge hip abduction. Lie on your side with both legs stacked atop each other and your bottom elbow on the floor directly under your shoulder. Lift your body up off the floor so your weight is on your elbow and feet. From this position, lift your top leg up toward the ceiling, keeping the knee straight. Lower your leg back down and then lower your body to the mat to complete the rep. Switch sides when you’re finished.

What Is a Touchback in Football?

The touchback rule only applies to American football. Touchbacks occur in the end zone and result in the offensive team beginning play from their 20 yard line. The NFL rulebook explains that a touchback occurs when the ball’s momentum

, created by the opponent, carries it onto or inside the goal line, where it becomes “dead.” The only exceptions to this are missed field goals and touchdowns.
In American football — especially at the college and professional levels — the player executing the kickoff often kicks the ball into the opponent’s end zone. If the returner catches it, he can either attempt to run the ball out of the end zone or kneel down and give himself up. If he kneels, it is a touchback, and his team gets the ball at their 20 yard line. He can also let the ball go through the end zone. Once the ball goes out of bounds in the end zone, it is a touchback.
In the NFL, a punted ball does not have to enter the end zone for a touchback to occur, though this is often the case. A player on the punting team who attempts to down the ball before it crosses the plane of the goal line must keep both feet outside the goal line. A member of the punting team who touches the ball with a foot on or inside the goal line, even though the ball may not have entered the end zone, causes a touchback. A ball that is touched by a punt-coverage player that then rolls or bounces into the end zone is also a touchback.
Touchbacks can occur from fumbles and interceptions. If the offense fumbles into the opponent’s end zone, a defensive recovery in the end zone results in a touchback. It is also a touchback if the offense fumbles and the ball goes out of bounds in the opponent’s end zone. Additionally, if a defensive player intercepts the ball in the end zone and is tackled inside the goal line (or kneels and gives himself up) it is a touchback, and the offense will take over from the 20 yard line.
Safeties and touchbacks both occur in the end zone, but a safety is a defensive play and rewards the defense with two points for their team. Safeties occur when the ball carrier is outside his own end zone and decides to enter it. If he is tackled behind the goal line, it is a safety. If the offense fumbles into their own end zone and the recovering offensive player is downed in the end zone, it is also a safety. The team that concedes the safety must then kick off to their opponent.

What Is a Gasser CrossFit Football?

CrossFit Football is a strength and conditioning program designed by NFL players and coaches for football players and other power athletes. The program uses a variety of functional movements executed at high intensity levels to simulate the metabolic demands of a football game. These movements include weightlifting exercises to increase strength and power along with running to improve agility, footwork and overall conditioning. A common exercise for conditioning is the ¡°gasser¡± with several variations based on the overall goal of the day’s workout.
The gasser is a specific conditioning drill used by CrossFit Football in conjunction with the workout of the day (WOD) — and is effective for football players of any ability level, ranging from professional and collegiate athletes to youth or beginning players. The overall function of the gasser drill is to build a strong mind, heart and body along with developing speed, agility and power. Your goal in every gasser is to perform the drill as fast as possible, thus creating the most speed and power.
You complete a full gasser by running the width of a football field four consecutive times. Start on one sideline and sprint to the opposite sideline

, touch the line and sprint back to the starting line. The 1/2-gasser covers 106 yards to be covered as fast as possible. Some CrossFit Football workouts incorporate the 1/2-gasser into a circuit where you complete other exercises such as cleans, squats or deadlifts.
The 1/4-gasser covers one width of the football field, an opportunity to work on all-out speed and running form. Start on a sideline, accelerate and run as fast as possible to the opposite sideline. Similar to 1/2-gassers, the 1/4-gasser mixes into various CrossFit Football workouts. Some workouts include running 1/4-gassers on the minute for 10 to 15 minutes.
