About this deal

KONTROL S4 MK3 Standalone Mode: With firmware version 0.5.8, the S4 MK3 can be used as a standalone mixer without the need for a computer.

This is a big improvement from the S4 MK1 which was noted for having a lot of ghosting and jittering with its faders. The knobs are all recessed, each with an orientation in both the EQ section as well as the gain, giving it a more classic mixer FX feel. Pads Finally - the unit is really well built, it just has a premium feel. The lighting is well balanced and the controls and commands are more intuitive as you continue to use it. This greatly helps with reducing dust as well as any potential soda or coffee spills. Knobs and Buttons Overall, the updates to mixer layout/spacing, components, and styling make the center of this controller look and feel a lot more like Pioneer DJ gear, like the ubiquitous DJM-900NXS/2 mixer. At first I was a bit annoyed at this new “Pioneer” look, but it’s growing on me and certainly feels more professional than the classic Traktor controllers. One section in particular is a welcome nod in that direction… The Mixer FX (Instant Gratification)

The Hardware Improvements

They work exactly as they always have done – but we suspect they are going to get less use than previously due to those Mixer FX… Library controls The sample button lets you control Remix Sets that are loaded, triggering active slots using the top four pads, and you can adjust volume and filter for individual sounds too (more detail in the video, where I demo this).

Starting off with the faders, the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4 MK3 uses the same technology found with the S5 and S8 controllers. It’s simple to use and saves diving into the config panel in the software to choose external inputs – but at the time of writing, you do need to have the unit plugged into your laptop with Traktor running to use external inputs at all – in other words, no true standalone capability. A good side of all of the above, though, is that all lines, phono and mic inputs are routed through all of Traktor’s EQing and effects, just as if they were internal software inputs. Mixer FXUnfortunately, most DJs don’t really care all that much about that level of sound control. Instead, the majority of digital DJ style opt for the simpler “turn and go” effects. The haptic system delivers remarkable turntable performance that blows other spinning wheels out of the water and feels like a real turntable. The anticipate cue point “feel” was less exciting. Scratch with ease using high-resolution, silicone-damped, touch-sensitive jog wheels with rubber-coated outer rim and glossy top plate Move the switch to either LINE or PHONO next to the INPUT CHANNEL B or INPUT CHANNEL A on the rear panel of the TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 hardware.
