About this deal

Maror, of course, is the bitter herb on display at the Passover seder table to remind celebrants of the pain behind the Jewish exodus. Through a variety of interconnected characters, spanning time and place, Tidhar takes us on a journey not only through Israel's criminal underworld, but across Israel's history itself. Of course his energetic style, vividness of descriptions, and vivacious characters are all there, but this time - there is no speculative component. Beyond that though this was an involved, expansive crime novel that didn't let itself be bound by that definition. In the West Bank in 1977 a female journalist tries to find who is behind a property scam in the occupied territories.

A web of corruption, drug dealing and violence snakes across the decades and across cities and continents. The writing is awesome and I found myself really wrapped in some of the scenes and it was easy to visualise. I believe the novel was originally written in English (though it may have been translated from the Hebrew) but it assumes substantial familiarity with Israeli popular culture. Following it is Genghis' denoument, witnessed by Sylvie in bitterness that he will never now be convicted for his many crimes, instead being memorialised as a great general. Tidhar began publishing with a poetry collection in Hebrew in 1998, but soon moved to fiction, becoming a prolific author of short stories early in the 21st century.

The book is a retelling of Israel's nationbuilding through the lens of its criminal underbelly, taking inspiration from multiple real-life events that occurred in Israel between 1970 and 2001 (roughly). But his death is also, of course, an excuse for another round of disproportionate retribution on the Palestinians, and thus Cohen pushes forward Israel's agenda once again. And in the middle of it all, like Shelob in her lair, or an imperturbable Mr Wolff in Pulp Fiction, the policeman Cohen manipulates politicians, colleagues and crime bosses alike, in service of the country that he loves. The writing style, the plotline, the characters and the way they were developed were all incredible. This turning point is invoked viscerally as the kids head into Tel Aviv where their despair turns into anger and they set upon an Orthodox man they find in the street. In an MDMA trance Avi envisions a “new and different future” where he might avoid his terrible fate as one of Cohen’s bad lieutenants. Maror' is the story of a war for the soul of Israel - a dazzling spread of narrative gunshots across four decades and three continents.
