About this deal

This impacts on almost all aspects of the image: it looks a bit flatter, with the dark elements that contribute to solidity not quite dark enough. Artefacts were kept to a minimum with good SD content and the HD channels didn’t highlight any issues at all. Panasonic has revealed the JX600 4K TV, an affordable LCD screen and 2021 upgrade to last year’s HX600 – as well as only a slight step down from the utterly fantastic HX800.

The Panasonic is a little lacking when it comes to fine details and nuanced shading, too, with faces missing the realism and subtlety available elsewhere. Consider pairing this TV with an external sound system to get more energy and weight out of what you watch. The CX680 stand works well and although you can’t swivel the screen, it is sturdy and holds the screen firmly in place, unlike the recent Sony TV we had in and panicked about every time we walked past it. Watching Rogue One (4K Blu-ray), I initially assumed the noise was film grain (Rogue One was shot digitally).

Because the out of the box greyscale tracking was so good we just used the 2 point white balance controls to get it tracking perfectly. The CX700 only had feet at the far ends of the chassis which ruled it out for placement on both of the TV racks we had available. Around the screen is a nicely brushed effect bezel which is thin and in keeping with contemporary designs with the Panasonic logo at the bottom which is also unassuming and not in your face or backlit.

When it comes to the Panasonic HX600’s Dolby Vision performance, I’m slightly torn over whether it’s better than the Philips. Its latest generation of 4K TVs are not only more affordable, they're among some of the best televisions ever made.

The whole smart experience is easy to use and has a nice graphical interface that the whole family will be able to get to grips with. We’re not saying this is a bad 4K HDR performance, but the picture doesn’t pop or sizzle as you might expect. The LED edge-lit backlight also incorporates Panasonic’s local dimming which, when added to the already decent black levels from the VA panel, promises a better contrast performance.

However this is very much a personal preference issue and you should experiment for yourself to see what works for you. In those instances you are likely to see more and more artefacts and issues with the source material and the LCD technology. The CX680B is available in 40-, 50- and 55-inch screens sizes and it's the middle size we have in for review. Setting it to Low seems best; set to High, the HX600 gives the impression of sports being played at a slower ebb, while also introducing blur. Using our Leo Bodnar lag tester we recorded a lag time of 39ms which is probably best described as an average result that will not affect the vast majority of gamers. There are smarts in the form of ‘Hey Google’ or Alexa for control of the TV through a connected voice assistant-enabled device. Be aware that Game Mode on the Panasonic doesn’t affect the lag time, it just changes picture settings.

You certainly don’t need to be any kind of expert to set everything up first time and it just all works in an easy to follow manner. This technology works similarly to standard HDR (high dynamic range) but offers less generic video improvement, giving films a wonderful new level of immersion as you've never experienced before. It’s also compatible with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, meaning your favorite channels are just a voice command away and accessible hands-free. You can introduce and notice these issues if you use higher light output presets like Normal and Dynamic and have settings higher than they should be for best performance. The picture is powered by Panasonic’s 4K Colour Engine, with support for HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision– the latter included for more “vivid colours” as well as better contrast and brightness levels with compatible 4K discs and streaming services. As far as unique selling points go, a pedestal stand with adjustable height doesn’t seem especially thrilling, particularly if, as is the case here, it’s a rather inelegant, labour-intensive feature. Dolby Vision is a set of technologies used to enhance contrast, depth and colour so users get the most out of their cinematic experience. With an Alexa enabled device, you can ask Alexa to change channels, adjust the volume or turn the power on or off with just your voice. With ambient light, black levels are down on the 50PUS8545, and when it comes to shadow detail – digging that extra bit of detail in the darkest part of an image – the Philips betters it. We found that the VA panel and native blacks were good enough without any help and mixed scene material looked superb for an LCD panel, with just the lowest parts of the shadows missing.
