About this deal

The petrol-power Caddy TSI claims 43.5-44.1mpg with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, 41.5-42.2mpg with the DSG auto. VW Caddy service warranty If all you want to do is organize the four ballpoint pens you bring with you to work every day, you probably don’t need an organizer that also fits a laptop sleeve. However, if you’re carrying a mobile office, or traveling to a client, you might want to have a bit more on hand. While shaving a few grams with materials like Dyneema can be a cool touch to your EDC, be prepared to pay for that weight saving with your wallet. Versatility and Adaptability Think we're joking? On one right-hand drive test Caddy we pressed the voice control button on the steering wheel, only to then be greeted with a message on the infotainment screen saying this feature could be activated via 'the Shop'. Combined with the lightness of the new electrically-assisted power steering (replacing the previous hydraulic power steering), the Caddy Cargo almost feels too sharp at first – we found ourselves turning too much in the corners. Why We Like It: The origami-like organization is there when you need it and folds away when you don’t.

VW is convinced buyers will like the modernity of the screen, and it’s certainly true that van customers are increasingly expecting higher levels of creature comforts. At idle and at a cruise, the petrol engine is nearly silent, making this the most refined Caddy you can buy. Though sadly, this makes the Caddy’s excessive levels of road and tyre noise even more apparent – this isn’t a quiet van, despite the refined engine. How much will it cost to run?

BlueMotion technologies

The 102PS 2.0 TDI Caddy, with its 250Nm of torque, offers a better blend of performance and economy, returning 67.2mpg with emissions of 109g/km. It pulls well and delivers decent power and overall drivability. Hailing from Jakarta, ORBITGEAR is a techwear brand that gives you a crazy amount of craftsmanship for your money. The MOD-01 is meant to integrate into a plethora of their other bags and slings, but can be carried on its own as a small sling or be used separately as an organization accessory. This is a solidly constructed piece of kit that can take a beating and the mix of highly technical fabrics and construction makes it a piece worth drooling over. A stop/start system automatically shuts down the engine when the car is stationary and then automatically restarts it when pulling away. Switching off the engine while stationary reduces fuel use, emissions and noise. Modern cars now come with stop/start by default, but it was a relatively new technology when VW started using it under the BlueMotion name. 2) Energy recuperation

Let’s face it, if you’re a member of the Cult-of-Bihn, you probably already have one (or multiple) of these. The HLT keeps the classic “round-ish” Bihn styling with multiple internal and external attachment points for all your bits and bobs. While it’s definitely more of a “misc” pouch than a tech-oriented one, it definitely deserves a second look for anyone needing a “do it all” solution. All versions of the Caddy Cargo come fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard – which puts it in a better position than the bigger VW Transporter, as basic versions of that still only get five speeds. The exceptions are for the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, which claims 54.3mpg, and the highest specification models, which are down just over 1mpg due to the changes in standard equipment (including the wheels). VW claims a fuel economy figure of between 41.4mpg and 44.1mpg ( WLTP), with CO2 emissions of between 145g/km and 155g/km. That’s significantly more CO2 than the diesels, but to put a happier spin on things, the petrol Caddy Cargo will achieve these numbers very soon after starting up without the long wait for a diesel to warm up. These identically Stellantis-engineered vehicles offer an impressive blend of practicality, refinement, fuel economy, technology and value. So VW is right to be taking them very seriously – the latest Caddy stands no chance if it can’t tussle with these successfully.

Verdict: is the Volkswagen Caddy Cargo any good?

In standard form the Caddy can carry a cargo load of up to 3.2 cubic metres while the Caddy Maxi can carry up to 4.2 cubic metres - both can accommodate a Euro pallet lengthways. That's the same as before which means the Caddy still lags behind the competition when it comes to outright carrying ability. The Transit Connect is easier to load and has a bigger payload. The front folds down, giving you a more direct view of the gear inside. Compared to others where you’re either looking down or from a steep angle, this makes more sense for convenience and ergonomics. Hence why this isn’t just a pouch—it’s a desk caddy, an organizer that feels at home on your work table. Inside The Pouch But while the interior looks good and feels better quality than anything else in the small van sector, it’s not all good news inside the cab. Almost all of the controls have been moved into the touchscreen, and many of those that remain independent use VW’s latest touch-sensitive button design. What’s the problem here?

The amount you have to turn the steering wheel has been substantially reduced, for starters, while changes to the rear suspension are intended to make the Caddy Cargo feel as nimble with a full load as it is without it. Doesn’t quite pull this off, but it’s close. How clean are the diesel engines? In a nutshell, the Desk Caddy is half-pouch, half-desk caddy. You know—the sort of desk caddy you’d use on your workspace to organize stationery. To achieve this, the front part folds out, and presto! All of your gear is within sight, with none of the looking-down-from-above we’re used to doing with typical pouches. This way, the Desk Caddy can sit comfortably on the table without you having to bring it closer for better viewing. Highlights of the new safety kit include Travel Assist, which combines the active lane-keeping with the adaptive cruise to help control the van at any speed. You may or may not find this ‘assistance’ annoying, but one of the great things about all the Caddy Cargo’s new safety stuff is just how easy it is to access the settings and tweak everything to your like. Offered up in a bunch of different colorways and materials, from sustainably harvested wood pulp and cotton offcuts to recycled PET bottles, this pouch has a unique look and feel unlike any other material I’ve handled. Couple this with my favorite design accessory for ANY use (magnets!) and you get a pretty solid little pouch that also looks fantastic. All that said, the new Caddy is available with some particularly high-tech driving assistance systems, including Travel Assist for the first time on a VW van. Although we do love this material, we should note that the Powershuttle isn’t weatherproof. Nylon is slightly weather-resistant, so you’ll likely be fine if you spill a drink nearby, but water will soak through eventually. This thing will likely remain in your bag, so it’s not a huge concern, but it is something to be aware of. Water + tech gear = not good. Thule Subterra Powershuttle Plus YKK Zipper (Left) & Interior Zipper (Right) Thanks to great all-round visibility and generously-sized side mirrors the Volkswagen is easy to navigate around narrow streets while a good turning circle helps its manoeuvrability - even in the case of the Caddy Maxi’s longer wheelbase. The new Caddy also now comes with cruise control and a speed limiter as standard.
