About this deal

ISO (International Standards Organisation) microchips are recognised worldwide. Non-ISO microchips are mostly found in older dogs and cats which were chipped before ISO was established, so while they’re rarer there is still a risk you could encounter one. The tuning capacitor works with the antenna coil to form an LC circuit when the scanner passes it by, allowing the chip to transmit data to the scanner. The tuning capacitor is tuned to the scanner’s specific frequency, which activates the circuit and gives the chip power. Cat microchips are nearly always implanted beneath the skin between the shoulder blades. Known as the “scruff,” this area of skin is very loose and easily manipulated. As a result, there is plenty of room for a tiny microchip to sit without causing any irritation, even in the tiniest kittens. How Is a Cat Microchip Implanted? If you would like to learn more about this cat flap, read our full SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap review. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Subha-Ganguly/publication/297088924_Implantation_of_microchip_in_animals_A_Review/links/56dd043908aee73df6d40596/Implantation-of-microchip-in-animals-A-Review.pdf

As a cat moves through a veterinary office or shelter, scan before each move or procedure to ensure you have the right cat. Microchips are small, electronic devices implanted into your cat’s skin. They help a vet or shelter identify your cat in case they find them wandering around. In some countries, you might be legally required to microchip your cat – or they may be euthanized in the long run if found without ID. New legislation to introduce compulsory cat microchipping is being laid in Parliament today (13 March), making it easier for lost or stray pet cats to be reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

The new microchipping rules follow a Government call for evidence and consultation on the issue in which 99% of respondents expressed support for the measure. The introduction of compulsory cat microchipping was a manifesto commitment and an Action Plan for Animal Welfare pledge. By getting their cat microchipped, owners can increase the likelihood that they will be reunited with their beloved pet in the event of it going missing.” Cats Protection’s Head of Advocacy, Campaigns & Government Relations, Madison Rogers, said: Since the process is just like any regular injection, it will take only a few seconds to do the job. Completing the paperwork for the microchip takes much longer than implanting the microchip itself. And while it is not necessary to get it done by a veterinarian, I recommend a vet do it. Q. Will microchipping hurt my pet? Prop the cat flap open with a peg or strong tape. Give your cat time to get used to going in and out through the hole and lower it slightly over time so that they have to start pushing it a little. If your cat is reluctant to use the flap, try enticing them through with their favourite treats. The new microchipping rules follow a Government call for evidence and consultation on the issue in which 99% of respondents expressed support for the measure.

Government delivers on key manifesto pledge to introduce compulsory microchipping for all owned cats It is also best to buy a scanner that can read microchips at all frequencies, too. Microchips typically come in two types, ISO and non-ISO – you can read more about this in our FAQs. The differences in scanners are all down to the frequency at which the chip is read. Scanners can read microchips at 134kHz (the most common frequency), 125kHz, and 178kHz. 134kHz is used worldwide and is the most widespread scanner frequency.

Overview

Remember: Having your cat microchipped might be a mandatory regulation in your country, but unfortunately, this won’t be enough in case kitty runs away.
