About this deal

Test discharge for time, at one or preferably two different UPS load levels, followed by a review of the BMS data, looking for temperature or voltage anomalies during the discharge. As usual, we found the 9PX to be easy to set up and get going. Unbox it, get it a power supply, plug in what we want to be protected, and we were good to go. While there are several management options, we had the network card and that was the easiest method to get management up and going. Truth be told, the 9PX would be fine without these on a one-off basis. That said, for IT admins managing larger Eaton deployments, the variety of management software does add a lot of value when it comes to visualizing and proactively managing these environments. However, li-ion systems are more sensitive to charging and discharging methods. Most of these batteries include a battery management system (BMS) to protect against short circuits and overcharging.

Power failures are a fact of life, but if you are managing a data center or a corporate network, they can be catastrophic. Uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) help keep data centers humming even when there is a tripped breaker or larger outage. At their end of useful life, recycling lithium-ion batteries is a major issue. For lead acid batteries there are multiple established recycling centres and companies. Ups to 90% of a lead acid battery can be reclaimed and recycled including the plastic case, lead terminals & plates, and hydrochloric acid. This is not the case for lithium-ion batteries. Charge and Recharge Efficiency: N1C Lithium Ion batteries can be charged/ discharged over 1000 times versus 200-400 charges/ discharges for standard VRLA batteries. N1C Lithium UPS units include built in chargers capable of 1-hour recharge times, compared to 4-10 hour recharge times of VRLA battery UPS systems. For additional battery capacity, cabinets can be installed in parallel to increase capacity up to 5 MW per single system.Smaller Footprint: A smaller footprint translates to reduced cooling requirements as well as about a two thirds reduction in weight. This offers the installation flexibility needed by many IT departments.

The Meters tab displays Utility current, voltage, and frequency metering. The Output meters display current, voltage, frequency, and battery status. The battery status pane shows the current battery status with overview stats like the nominal voltage and capacity, battery type, how many EBMs are connected, and expected replacement date. Almost everyone with a mobile phone has become accustomed to the features and benefits offered by lithium-ion battery sets. Older handsets are often sold-on to the second-user market and if a battery requires recycling it is important to place this in the correct waste stream and to consider the battery as general waste. With larger sets this can mean the installation of a sizeable battery within a server room or data centre and if the battery is lead acid, fire suppression should be a key consideration in a risk assessment. If thermal runway were experienced this could lead to fire in the room and the need to evacuate safely and suppress the fire. In addition to a fire suppression system, placing the UPS system and lithium battery set in a separate UPS room that can provide containment of any such and rare issue could help to further reduce the impact of such an event. UPS Battery Recycling This Unit allows users to utilize onboard and external management interfaces like IPM2, VPM, and PredictPulse Insight. VPM allows the remote monitoring of the power of up to thousands of PDU and UPS device. This is done through an intuitive GUI. VPM is vendor agnostic. The software alerts for when devices need to be replaced proactively versus reactively. And VPM can deliver real-time analytics so admins know what is going on with power in their facility.

This graph is based on actual measured runtime data. All measurements were taken with new, fully charged batteries and a balanced resistive load (PF = 1.0). Actual runtimes may vary from the values of this graph. Actual runtimes are dependent on several v Full time multi-pole noise filtering : 0.3% IEEE surge let-through : zero clamping response time : meets UL 1449 Remote trip of the battery cabinet breaker: note that the UPS does NOT generate the shunt trip command for battery breakers (a UPS "load off" or UPS EPO command will shut off the UPS but will not trip the battery breakers in the LG cabinets). The user is responsible for providing +24VDC wiring to each LG cabinet to facilitate a remote shunt trip of the battery cabinet breaker. See the installation manual and the customer drawing #110000683 for details of this connection.

Verification of correct and safe installation as per the vendor’s manuals, including torquing of terminals and set up of the battery management system by a trained service engineer. Configuration files should be saved for future reference. UPS systems are typically built using lead-acid batteries to provide power in case of an outage, but these solutions have not evolved much in the past few years. Data centers increasingly are searching for ways to reduce the size and weight of these systems, reduce cooling requirements, and extend the life of UPS systems while reducing costs. Upon logging in to the network card management interface, the landing screen displays EMP readings, outlet status, energy flow charts, power readings, and active alarms. The left panel provides access to the other management features. UPS power supply applications normally use the VRLA AGM type because of its lower internal resistance, high specific power and efficiency, low self-discharge and lower purchasing cost. AGM uninterruptible power supplies batteries also charge faster and can deliver a high current of short duration. Flooded LA UPS batteries Do you need to add water to flooded lead acid batteries? For larger online uninterruptible power supplies, a UPS manufacturer will offer discrete systems or solutions that can be charge either lead acid or lithium batteries. The option is often a firmware setup choice on installation. Again, there will be a price premium for lithium over lead acid. A point to note is that as the size of the UPS in kVA/kW increases so does the size of the UPS battery. That results in a lower cost of ownership (TCO) and lower maintenance costs. According to an analysis by Schneider Electric, li-ion-based UPS systems can have a TCO that is 10-40% less (as of 2016) than that of a lead-acid system over a 10-year period.

Lithium battery management systems and battery monitoring systems, like Cellwatch and BTech, have the following similarities: That's where an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) comes in. Its main function is to act as a big battery that powers your devices when your electricity goes out. They range from small units that can sustain a few low-power devices to big house units for entire homes. The main tabs run down the left side and include Home (above), Meters, Controls, Protection, Environment, Settings, and Maintenance. On the Meters Tab, one can see a bit deeper into the battery and energy flow. We see the voltage and frequency, the output, battery status, and battery health. Re-Charge Speed: Charging either a li-ion or lead-acid battery to 80% takes roughly the same amount of time. But li-ion systems do have an advantage beyond that charge capacity. Reaching a 100% state of charge for lead acid batteries can take more than five to ten hours, while a li-ion battery can reach that state in 30 minutes to an hour.

Service and preventive maintenance

PredictPulse Insight is a cloud-based remote monitoring and predictive analytics service. Like the above, PredictPulse can predict potential failures and allow users to proactively replace the devices and avoid unscheduled downtime. Subscribing to the service means Eaton is keeping an eye on the devices and admins can worry about other things. And if you can schedule downtime, users can save on costs and downtime in the future. Total Cost of Ownership: For UPS systems, lithium-ion batteries are generally more expensive than lead-acid batteries, although those costs are falling. The real advantage for li-ion systems is in their lifespan. Over a 15-year period, lead-acid-based systems would need to be replaced two or three times, while li-ion systems may not need replacement at all. Switchgear collects all information about each battery cell and controls all battery module management systems calculating state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH). It also contains a moulded case circuit breaker and a shunt resistor. Take time to recharge data and record after a full discharge test. Verify UPS charge limits are programmed correctly.
