About this deal

Many people might be wondering if a warming UK climate means that there will be less illness and death caused by cold weather in future.

This is the average height of the waves, 1-2 miles out to sea. The height of the waves can vary. The

Let's Talk

The effects of climate change on cold-related illness and deaths could have some benefits, but projections suggest that the total number of cold-related deaths each year is unlikely to decline significantly due to issues like poor housing and fuel poverty. Flooding also has extensive and significant impacts on health including direct effects like skin and gut infections from exposure to contaminated flood water. It’s really important to reinforce that the harm to health associated with adverse weather is not inevitable. There are things we can do all year round, and during periods of adverse weather, to minimise the impact.

Professor Kendon explains: “The observed rainfall record in the UK is fairly erratic with a large amount of variability, these latest projections show that this is likely to continue through the century. What we can see from the higher resolution output is an even more erratic frequency of extreme events each year, so this could mean we see clusters of record breaking intense rainfall events, followed by a period when no records are broken. Despite the underlying trend, these pauses in the intensification of local rainfall extremes can last a surprisingly long time – even multiple decades. We also publish a series of ‘action cards’ advising the NHS, social care organisations and professionals about the actions they should take to keep the public healthy and safe under different levels of alert. A version of the Met Office Unified Model, the same that is used for the operational UK weather forecast, has been run 12 times at a resolution of 2.2km (known as k-scale modelling) to give an ensemble of 100-year climate projections. RCP 8.5is a pathway where greenhouse gas emissions keep accelerating. This is not inevitable, but a plausible scenario if we do not curb our emissions.

Another concern is apparent sudden transitions to a much higher frequency of extreme events illustrated by the model output. This would suggest a sudden increase in the numbers of extreme rainfall events, outside of the experience of recent decades. If this scenario did happen it could lead to impacts where infrastructure was unprepared for such a change in our weather.” We recently published a new Adverse Weather and Health Plan as part of our commitment under the second National Adaption Programme for the UK to bring together and improve existing guidance on weather and health. At 27ºC or over, people with impaired sweating mechanisms find it especially difficult to keep their bodies cool (for instance the very young, people with long term health conditions or older people, particularly people taking certain medications). Here at UKHSA, we play a key role in providing evidence and advice to help policy makers, organisations and individuals do just that. The risks to our health from adverse weather

Nearest forecasts

There is an equally strong evidence base on the risk to health from cold weather, again with older people (people of 65 and over) and those with some long-term medical conditions facing the greatest risk. Fuel poverty exacerbates this situation. This summer UKHSA will publish the Health Effects of Climate Change, a landmark report produced periodically and last published in 2012. This will bring together the latest UK climate change projections and an assessment of the range of health risks. During periods of hot weather last year – the hottest on record – we saw thousands of heat-related deaths, each one a human tragedy, also leading to significant pressure on our health and care services.
