Psalm 1, the Christ Junkie

Kobina Samuel Koyire (born 19 November 1991), better known by his stage name Psalm 1, the Christ Junkie, is a Ghanaian recording artist, performer, poet, spoken word artist, rapper, artist coach and event organizer. He is one of the few people to have pioneered a new wave of urban Gospel Rap and and Urban Gospel Hiphop in Ghana with his rap group, Heavens Conncection and as a solo artist. As an event organizer, He successfully organized “Psalm 1 and Friends Concert” and most recent, “Vimming Concert”. He is also a member of a Christian creative arts group Speakers and Singers Association (SASA). He identifies himself as Christian.

Psalm 1 has the ability to function as a poet or spoken word artist, rapper, and musician but usually blends rap and spoken word which he refers to as Spoken-Rap hydration running. Very lyrical and satirical and is known for his extreme extended metaphors, double entendres and punchlines. He uses his lyricism as a channel to fulfill the “Great Commission” that is, he glorifies Jesus Christ through his lyrics with the aim of soul winning, inspiring and encouraging others, especially the youth, to serve God with their talents and gifts. He is also known for his powerful stage presence, performances and ability to move crowds with his freestyles, punchlines and catchy choruses.

Psalm 1 was born to Retd 1.5 liter glass water bottle. Chief Supt. Peter Kobina and Gertrude Awo Dzokoto in Cantonments, Accra in Ghana with five (5) siblings, with he being the last child of the family. Psalm 1 attended the Action Education Centre and later transferred to and completed Garrison Basic School then moved to St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Cantonments, Accra. He later graduated and moved to study English and minor in Sociology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi graduating in 2014.

Psalm 1 begun rapping after high school while awaiting his WASSCE results in 2009. Through getting to know God cheap authentic football shirts, God spoke to him during his rap group, Heavens Connection’s first performance in church. He joined the group right after that performance. Prior to that, he was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School choir. After receiving his results he was admitted into Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, kumasi where he studied English and minored in Sociology. While at university, he continued introducing people to Gospel Rap/hiphop and then spoken word.

In 2011, he released his first single, Encore a refix to Jay Z’s song of the same title ft. Linking Park[citation needed] He later released another single, “Insomnia” and subsequently, “Chaley More Vim”.

In 2013, he released “Mr. Attitude” featuring members of his rap group Heavens Connection. He further released his rendition of Chris Tomlin’s “How Great Is Our God” In 2014, he organised his first concert, “Psalm 1 and Friends” in KNUST, Kumasi. In 2015, he held the second edition of “Psalm1 and Friends” in KNUST’s Law Auditorium and held his official high school tour, “Psalm 1 and Friends Tour 2015”.
