A Summary of the Rules of Professional Soccer

At first, the game of soccer as played in England operated by a free-for-all mentality and rules that changed from one place to the next. The year 1863 is considered the birth date of the Football Association, the first body to set down specific rules that unified the game. Today FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, oversees the game on a worldwide level. Professional soccer mostly follows the same rules set down for international competitions.
The game is played within an area that measures between 100 and 130 yards long and between 50 and 100 yards wide. The goal is 24 feet wide and 8 feet high. The penalty area extends 18 yards from the goal and is 44 yards wide. A center line divides the field into two halves.
Each soccer team is allowed 11 players on the field at one time. One of those players is the goalkeeper, the only player allowed to use his hands. Players move the ball by dribbling or passing the ball using any part of their body except their hands and arms. Teams are allowed to replace players with substitutes, but in professional and international soccer a player is not allowed to return once he is removed from the game.
The object of soccer is to score more goals than your opponent. A goal occurs when the ball goes inside the goal posts and under the connecting crossbar. The ball must also pass all the way across a line that stretches from one goal post to the other. Scoring is influenced by the offside rule. A player must have two opponents, one of whom is usually the goalkeeper, between him and the goal when the ball is passed.
Players can be called for fouls in soccer. Physical fouls, such as tripping or pushing, result in a direct kick

. In a direct kick a player can shoot directly on goal if he is close enough. Non-physical fouls, such as offsides or obstructing an opponent, result in an indirect kick, in which the ball must touch a teammate before it can be struck at goal.
Goalkeepers are only allowed to use their hands within the penalty box that surrounds the goal

. Once a goalkeeper has possession of the ball, he must release it with a pass or kick within six seconds. In addition, he cannot receive a pass from a teammate with his hands. In that instance he essentially becomes another field player.

How to Replace a Football Bladder

Football bladders are similar to an inner tube. When the air valve fails or the bladder is punctured

, the best solution is replacement. Not all footballs have independent bladders, and you identify these by molded laces. Footballs with bladders have polyester laces across the seam of the ball that you replace as part of the procedure. Obtain the new bladder, a new lace and a lacing guide to replace a football bladder.
Insert a needle valve into the inflation hole on the ball. Squeeze the ball with both hands until it is fully deflated and remove the needle valve. Skip this step if the football is flattened or already deflated.
Cut the laces along the seam carefully with the points of scissors and pull the laces out by hand. Spread the seams apart by hand to access the bladder.
Reach inside the ball with one hand and put your fingers against the base of the inflation tube

. Work the inflation tube away from the inner surface of the ball. Remove the bladder by pulling it out through the seam. Discard the old bladder.
Position the new bladder along the seam of the football. Align the inflation tube with the hole in the ball where the old tube was removed. Hold the tube in this position with one hand as you tuck the ends of the bladder into the ball.
Reach inside the ball with one hand and push the end of the inflation tube through the hole in the ball. Pull the tube from the outside until the bladder is tight against the inside of the ball.
Cut the inflation tube with the scissors, 1/2 inch from the outer surface of the ball. This allows you to partially inflate the ball for lacing without the tube retracting inside the ball. You will trim the inflation tube flush after the ball is laced.
Put the ball flat on a stable surface with the inflation tube up. Attach the needle valve to an air pump. Moisten the end of the needle valve with water and insert the valve into the tube. Inflate the ball partially until the bladder is stable inside the ball. Pull the needle valve out of the inflation tube and set the pump aside for now.
Uncoil the new polyester lace. Refer to the lacing guide and lace the seam of the football using a lacing awl. Cut the ends of the lace as described and tuck each end firmly under the laces with the point of the awl.
Moisten the needle valve and inflate the football fully with the air pump. Carefully trim the excess portion of the inflation tube flush with scissors.

Jump Rope Workouts & Benefits

Rope jumping is a challenging and fun exercise for training your cardiovascular system and burning calories. Jumping rope engages your whole body, with emphasis on your leg muscles, particularly your calves. Incorporating rope jumping into your workout program can speed fat-burning and boost stamina, while sculpting lean legs and a toned torso.
Having excess weight on your body can have detrimental complications. You risk the development of high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoarthritis, depression and sexual dysfunction. Because of the intensity of rope jumping, jump rope workouts can be effective in helping you lose weight and reduce your disease risk.
Jump ropes give you a distinct advantage when you want to increase your caloric expenditure while lifting weights. Jump rope intervals also boost your aerobic endurance, giving you more bang for your workout buck. Passive rest breaks in between lifts can be substituted with high-intensity rope-jumping sessions that keep your heart rate up and promote fat-burning

. Rope jumping can also be used at the beginning of your workout for a warm-up.
Even though jumping rope is known as a cardiovascular exercise, a lot of muscles are being worked at the same time. This can create muscle tone and definition. The main muscles this applies to are the calves, shoulders, upper back and core. The calves are among the primary muscles involved with leaping ability. Since jumping rope puts a heavy emphasis on the calves, this activity can increase your vertical leap. This can be especially beneficial in sports such as basketball, football, baseball and volleyball. To make the exercise even more specific to leaping, perform high, exaggerated jumps as you jump rope. Increase the intensity of your jump rope workouts by using a weighted jump rope.
Physical skills that can be improved with rope jumping include better balance, coordination, timing and agility. A lot of these skills are sport specific

Soccer Rules & Regulations on Yellow Cards

Soccer referees use yellow cards to communicate an official caution to a player, substitute or substituted player. Unlike a verbal warning, a yellow card can have more drastic and long-lasting effects. A referee might show a player a yellow card for a number of different reasons.
A referee will show a player a yellow card for a number of standard offenses, as defined by FIFA’s Laws of the Game. Delaying the restart of play is a yellow card offense, as is a failure to maintain the required distance from a restart. Both potential cautions apply to corner kicks, free kicks and throw-ins. According to FIFA, a player always must receive permission from the referee before entering

, re-entering or deliberately leaving the field of play.
The referee uses his discretion when deciding to caution a player for unsporting behavior or dissent. Unsporting behavior includes any attempt to cheat or circumvent the laws of the game. It also covers acts of aggression such as swearing, spitting or striking another player. Dissent includes any word or action that shows disdain for or opposition to the referee’s rulings. Arguing with the referee often leads to a yellow card, but the boundaries are not always clear. If a player uses foul language when talking directly to the referee, she almost certainly will receive a yellow card. Dissent by action includes any physical display of anger after a refereeing decision. For example, kicking the ball away in anger, throwing a water bottle or striking a corner flag could result in a yellow card.
Some actions, such as overly aggressive tackles, might result only in a free kick to the opposition. If a player continues to foul in this manner

, though, the referee might decide to show him a yellow card for persistent infringement of the laws.
The referee can caution players even if they are not on the pitch. This includes substitute players sitting in the dugout or warming up on the touchline. These players can be cautioned for unsporting behavior, dissent by word or action or delaying the restart of play.
If a player receives a second yellow card during the course of a single match, the referee will immediately show her a red card and order her off the field of play. The player cannot return to the field of play during the match, and her team will have no option but to play with one fewer player. And in many professional leagues, a player will receive a fine, suspension or both if he receives a certain number of yellow cards during the season. Both fines and suspensions occur in Major League Soccer

Football Jersey Number Significance

The NFL requires that players at certain positions be restricted to a range of numbers. This tradition trickled down to the college and high school levels, though no specific rules limit numbers to certain positions. Some high-profile exceptions have existed to the standard numbering system, but fans can generally get an idea what position a player plays just by looking at his jersey number.
The NFL rule calls for punters, kickers and quarterbacks to use numbers 1 through 19. The most famous number 19 is perhaps Baltimore Colts legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas. Wide receivers can also use numbers 10 through 19, under certain circumstances. In college, it is considered an honor to wear No. 1, and often the flashiest or highest-profile players wear that number, whether a quarterback, running back or wide receiver.
Wide receivers and tight ends are assigned numbers 80 through 89, though if those numbers are all assigned, a receiver or tight end can use numbers 10 through 19. While most of the all-time best receivers wore numbers in the 80s, such as Jerry Rice

Offensive and defensive linemen usually share most of the same numbering system. Centers, though, are supposed to be numbered in the 50s, which is the same as linebackers. Offensive guards and tackles are supposed to have jersey numbers in the 60s and 70s. Defensive linemen are also supposed to have jerseys that fall between 60 and 79, though they can have numbers from 90 through 99 if the 60s and 70s are all taken.
Running backs and defensive backs have the widest range, with options ranging from 20 to 49. Linebackers are supposed to stick with numbers in the 50s, though 90 through 99 are available if the 50s are all taken. Defensive backs tend to go with jersey numbers in the 20s and 40s, while running backs tend to have numbers in the 30s and 40s.
The jersey system has notable exceptions. Raiders’ center Jim Otto wore No. 00, a reference to his last name. Viking defensive lineman and Hall of Famer Carl Eller wore No. 81. And countless college football stars have gone against tradition in their jersey assignments. Michigan wide receiver Anthony Carter wore No. 1, while Florida State defensive back Deion Sanders wore No

Many rookies in the NFL want to wear the numbers they wore in college, but that isn’t always possible. USC running back Reggie Bush wanted to continue wearing No. 5 when was drafted by New Orleans in 2006. The NFL however, stood firm in its rules and wouldn’t let the running back have the number. He opted for No. 25 when he came into the league. Other players come into the pros also wanted to wear their college numbers or a different number for a specific reason, only to find that the number has already been assigned or has been retired by the team. So, don’t look for a rookie to wear No. 16 for the San Francisco 49ers. That’s the number of Hall of Fame 49ers quarterback Joe Montana.

Since their introduction in 1976, Steadicams and other camera stabilization systems have become one of the most important tools in the filmmaking and sports’ world. ?Jerry Rice

Jerry Rice and the San Francisco 49ers were heavy favorites to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII. But as the fourth quarter began, they were trailing 13-6. It began to look as though the Bengals were about to pull off a huge upset. But then Jerry Rice, the 49ers wide receiver, took over.
On the fourth play of the 49ers’ first drive of the final quarter, Rice leaped high into the air to snag a Joe Montana pass.
As he came down, he stretched his 6’2” frame forward just enough to cross the Cincinnati goal line for the tying score

. But the determined Bengals answered with a field goal to take the lead 16-13.
Rice went back to work. This time, with just 1:15 remaining, he turned a short Montana toss into a 27-yard gain to the Cincinnati 18-yard line.
Two plays later, he streaked across the middle of the field. The Bengals secondary, fearing his speed and athletic ability, adjusted and double-teamed him.
This left John Taylor wide open for the touchdown throw. Respect for Rice had thus set up the game-winning touchdown pass. His 11 catches for a Super Bowl-record 215 yards earned him MVP honors.
Rice (born 1962) was the 49ers’ No. 1 draft choice in 1985. He had attended tiny Mississippi Valley State, where he established 18 NCAA Division II records. Named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, he holds virtually every meaningful NFL receiving mark.
Many experts contend that Rice is the greatest receiver the game has produced. His impressive credentials include 13 Pro Bowl selections, 14 1,000-yard receiving seasons, and 17 50-catch seasons.

Perhaps most incredibly, Rice missed only 17 regular season games in 20 years, and only three games if you disregard 1997, when Rice was sidelined with torn knee ligaments. His 303 games are the most ever by an NFL receiver and rank only 51 games off the overall league record for games played.
